Starting the Tech Journey: Ismail’s Story
Learn how one of our Orientation course students, Ismail Khan, decided a profession in tech was right for him and read his advice to students who are debating their own career path.
Do you have any professional experience in the tech field?
Actually, no. I started studies in business administration, but never finished. I was always thinking about getting into law, or maybe politics. Not tech.
What made you interested in a tech career?
I started to understand what the job market is like here in the country I live in. I wanted to find a job that would eventually give me the flexibility to work remotely for an international company. I wanted to find a job with a high salary, and with a lot of opportunity for jobs – I heard some crazy statistic like there are hundreds of thousands open positions in tech that aren’t being filled.
Tell us about your experience during the Orientation course.
I can say that I really didn’t know a lot about tech before the course. I had heard the terms “IT” and “tech” and ”cybersecurity” or “data analytics”, “software engineering”, but I really didn’t know what they meant, or what it meant to work in those professions.
After graduating the course, I felt I really had all the information I needed to be able to decide what was next for me in my tech career.

Was there anything about the course that was exceptional or stood out?
Masterschool has really deep roots in the industry, and in the community, and has a really good understanding about the curriculum that we need to learn.
One particular day our instructor did a lesson all about the creator of Python. And it was really, really interesting.
What about students who are considering joining the Orientation course? What would you tell them?
Do it. If they can take advantage of the experience, they will not be disappointed.
Any advice for new students starting the Orientation course?
My advice for them during the course is to pay extra attention to the lessons where we learn about each domain, because it’s a decisive month for them. After this month, they can move on to the advanced program and they’re going to choose one field to focus on, whether it’s software engineering or data analytics or maybe cybersecurity. Definitely join the live sessions every day and do the self study – because practice makes perfect. And if they have any problem or any question, don’t hesitate to reach out to their teacher.

What’s your plan now?
My next step is to go and really learn programming languages like Python — and everything it takes to be a very good web developer. I’m continuing with the Software Engineering program. So what I’m doing now is doing my absolute best to learn everything in the curriculum. I know whatever is being taught, they are teaching us for a reason. After that, the next step would be applying for jobs.
